Palm Springs has a great tradition of its own Desert Modernism, and Jill Lewis, of the eponymous San Francisco/Palm Springs-based architectural design firm, has brought a timeless synthesis of classic International Style to a boulder-strewn landscape at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. Unlike the manicured lawns of mid-century desert homes (and golf courses) here, the boulders are the landscape, with the spectacular mountains as the backdrop.

The 4-bedroom, 5-bathroom 4,600-square-foot structure is set on a platform that encompasses a series of paved terraces and a marble-clad infinity pool, opening seamlessly to the interiors. In contrast to the flawless interior finishes, the exterior is faced with the traditional Japanese blackened cedar Shou Sugi Ban cladding.

Below, the living room features an immense book-matched marble fireplace wall while the primary suite impressively occupies a wing of its own.

Built within the gated community of Desert Palisades—an innovative project of design-oriented architectural properties set in the rugged Chino Canyon terrain—the dwelling was brought to fruition by Jameson Neuhoff of Palm Canyon Development, landscaped by the firm Hoerr Schaudt and the interior design and staging is by Francesca Grace.
